Music For Minors II
Music For Minors II (MFMII) is a
nonprofit 501©(3)organization which provides music enrichment
programs in elementary schools in the East Bay area.
In addition to classroom enrichment, MFMII provides performance
opportunities for children on professional stages and family music
events at local schools and community events.
Music
For Minors II recruits and trains community volunteers to serve as
music docents in the schools. Each trained docent commits to
teaching a one-half hour music lesson weekly during the school year;
lessons include singing, rhythmic movement /dance,
instrumentation and listening appreciation. Music docents do not
replace regular music teachers, though they are sometimes assigned to
classrooms that also have a paid music teacher. Music For Minors II
encourages schools to expand their music programs, and is willing to
help fill the void during a time when schools are facing financial
difficulties. MFMII docents
work in partnership with classroom teachers to integrate music into
their curriculum. Many
classroom teachers have been trained by MFMII and have become music
docents in their own classrooms.
Our Mission
Keeping a song in our
children's hearts.
Our
mission is to nurture the love of music in children and develop
musical literacy through instruction, participation and performances,
enhancing academic education with musical arts.
Our History
Starting a song in our
children's hearts.
In
the fall of 1986, a Fremont parent heard of Music for Minors – Los
Altos, the mother organization serving peninsula schools and took
their training program.
She then taught all the Niles
School students in Fremont, recruited more volunteers to be trained
and established the nonprofit organization, Music for Minors II,
officially in 1988 when it was incorporated.
Seed money was obtained by this parent from Fremont Unified
School District and the Candle Lighters, a local philanthropic
women’s organization
serving the community.
A music resource center was established and expansion began in
three, then 5, then more elementary and pre-schools in local areas.
To
date, MFMII serves schools in Fremont, Newark, and Castro Valley
school districts with expansion beginning in Pleasanton and Dublin.
MFMII plans to continue its mission of reaching more and more
children with community support.
Our Volunteer
Board
Nurturing a love of music.
A
nine-member
board
of directors including community members, (parents, teachers,
seniors, musicians, etc.) sets policy and oversees the day-to-day
operations of Music For Minors II with the assistance of part-time
paid staff: Executive Director, Docent Training Coordinator, Docent
Manager, and Administrative Assistant. Each school that
participates in the program has a school liaison to the MFMII central
organization. The board meets monthly and promotes the program
through fundraising and sponsoring of musical events.
Our Staff
Supporting music
education.
MFMII’s wonderful staff
is dedicated to offering support and encouragement to all
volunteers in the program.
